Sports
Physical Education, Sport and Games are an essential and necessary element in the physical, mental and emotional development of boys at all ages. Therefore, at St. Edward’s School there is an ever-increasing focus on extending sports provision, the depth and quality of teaching and coaching, whilst broadening the range of activities available to every single child throughout the whole age range.
The ethos of sport at St. Edward’s is centred on an inclusive environment where each individual student is provided with an equal opportunity to experience traditional team and individual sports such as Rugby, Football, Cricket, Swimming, Tennis and Athletics.
The major games helps focus the boys to develop co-operation, team work and social interaction skills, whilst the introduction of new activities such as Rowing at Shiplake College and Volleyball into the summer Physical Education curriculum this year will aim to enhance a more well-rounded understanding of sports technique and performance. Physical Education lessons are currently undertaken on the school site and include sports such as Basketball, Hockey and Tennis. These activities allow all students to develop a range of skills both personally and in a team format. The boys in the Pre-Prep and those in Years 3, 4 and 5 are also coached in swimming by ASA coaches at the Reading Central Pool, where the very successful St. Edward’s Swimming Gala is held in front of parents on an annual basis.
Throughout the academic year, many of the boys at St. Edward’s compete against neighbouring schools in all the major games from U8 through to U13, allowing boys to experience competition against varying opposition. The introduction of the new games and fixtures venue based at the superb IBIS Riverside facility this year will certainly increase the standard and expectations of all the boys, and this prime location will be a key factor in significantly enhancing the profile of sport at St. Edward’s.
Sport is an integral and essential part of life for every child involved at the school and at St. Edward’s it is the intention to allow all the boys every opportunity to succeed whatever their chosen sport or activity may be.
