TILEHURST EISTEDDFOD – PIANO
Last Saturday morning it was a real joy to be at Tilehurst Methodist Hall to see and hear Nikolai Lester, Matteo Matricardi and Mark Rogers when they competed in the Eisteddfod’s piano solo classes.
It was a very successful morning for our boys. Mark won his class and the Boucher Challenge Cup. Matteo was a very close second.
Nikolai then won his class and the Challenge Cup; he was pipped by just one point by a 16-year-old for the title of best pianist overall.
Well done, boys; it was a brilliant performance by you all.
PRIZE WINNERS AND LAMDA CERTIFICATE AWARD WINNERS
We have arranged for a photographer from The Evening Post to take pictures of all those who won cups and certificates at the Tilehurst Eisteddfod for writing, singing and piano playing.
This will happen on Wednesday; please arrange for your son to bring his award(s) to school so that he may be included in the resultant press coverage.
SALTERS CHEMISTRY COMPETITION
Miss Walker accompanied Tim White, Sidney Hopper-Kelly, William Broom and Andy Allen when they took part in the Salters Chemistry Competition at Reading University this week. We came 4th, which was a good performance; when I picked them up the boys said that they had enjoyed the day, but at the same time seemed most delighted with the fluorescent-coloured surgical gloves they had brought home as mementoes.
WELLINGTON COLLEGE MATHS CHALLENGE
Edward Shorland, Loqman Kelly, Alistair Fleming and Jamie Porter took part in the Wellington College Maths Challenge this week. Although they did not win yet another laptop for the Head of Maths to play with, they were good representatives of our school and applied themselves wholeheartedly to the challenges they were set. Thank you to Mrs Bishop for looking after the boys on that day.
DRUMMING ASSEMBLY
This morning we had a loud wake-up call in assembly. Mr Donnelly, who teaches drumming to a number of our boys, introduced Alex White, Fintan Bishop, Joshua Holder-Browne, Christopher Smith and Kiran Walia – they all showed great skill and gave us an exciting start to our day. Thank you, boys; Fintan showed good signs of recovery from his recent illness – during his drum solo he smashed one of his sticks!
CATCH OF THE WEEK
The catch of the week award winner this week is Alex Granville, who is the ‘A’ team wicketkeeper. I used to keep wicket when I was younger which explains why my right hand is a funny shape. Well done, Alex.
ROW, ROW, ROW YOUR BOAT!
Ben Maxwell does not row his ‘gently down the stream’! At the recent National Rowing Championships, he won a gold medal in the J12 Single Sculls, a silver medal in the J13 Double Sculls and a further gold medal in the J13 Quad Sculls. Well done, Ben!
Oliver Hewson was Coxswain in the Quad Sculls event with Ben, and he too won a gold medal. Well done, Oliver!
CONGRATULATIONS
After months of entrance exams, interviews, references from me and some appeals, we do not yet have the full picture regarding next schools for the boys leaving us in July. I am, however, delighted to announce the following:
- Tim White has won the prestigious Thorneycroft Allrounder Scholarship at The Oratory School.
- Jamie Sweeney has passed the highly competitive examination for entry to Reading Grammar School.
Well done, boys. News of entries to other schools will follow.
ECO-FRIENDLY ST. EDWARD’S
Recycling
Our new Head of Science, Miss Walker, has introduces paper recycling at no cost to the school. Every classroom has a recycling bin and these are emptied and the paper collected every week.
Pre-prep Eco Week
Continuing these theme, next week is Eco Week in the Pre-prep Department. Boys will be travelling a recycling collection point and a recycling expert will visit them from Reading Borough Council.
The boys will also visit the Wind Turbine Visitors’ Centre close to the Madejski Stadium. All of this will heighten their awareness of their environment and how we need to use resources carefully.
On Friday they will be showing us their Eco Hats at assembly – which sounds intriguing and exciting.
NEW WILDLIFE IN SCHOOL
We now have in school, in the Science Lab, some wildlife other than your sons. There is a hamster (Albert, named by Rowan Reynolds, after Einstein), stick insects and, soon to arrive, giant snails.
GET YOUR HAIR CUT!
The summer and sunny weather are now here, so there is less need for boys to carry copious quantities of hair on their heads to protect them from the cold. Haircuts are called for this term for a number of the boys who have started to look quite scruffy. Your support with this would be much appreciated.
Kind regards,
DAVID CUMMING
